Where is your character going?

It was a dark and stormy night. Ok, that was a great start, but now where is your character going from there?

The last time I blogged I showed you a few places to name your character now I have a few that will help you find the place they are going.

This website has from soup to nuts in helping you name person, place or things. You can get lost for hours naming things.

I found this next one to be simple and straight forward. If you need a name for a town they have it.

This one next one is kind of techie, but comes up with some interesting results. Play around with it and see what you can come up with.http://www.mf2fm.com/RaToNaGe/

Advertising Your Writing #5

furry friends 5Today I’m going to tell you about Authonomy.com. This what they have to say on their website

“If you’re a writer, authonomy is the place to show your face – and show off your writing on the web. Whether you’re unpublished, self-published, looking to get published, or just getting started, all you need is a few chapters to start building your profile online, and start connecting with the authonomy writing community.”

The website is sponsored by Harper Collins Publishing. Be prepared with a short (25 words) description of your book and a longer one too. To share your book and get reviews you must publish 10,000 words or more. I just started today with them I”ll let you know how it goes or I’ll see you over there. If you do join, let me know and we can share reviews.

Advertising Your Writing #4

furry friends4I probably should have put this one as the first place to advertise your book.  http://www.goodreads.com. Has a lot going on for writers on their website. First you must join for free as a member who reads books. They will ask for ten books you have read and have you rate them.

You can also import your friends from Facebook and Twitter and see what they have been reading.

After waiting for a day, you can submit your book into their data base. From there you can join groups. The first one I joined is called Pure Indie Promotion. This group encourages you to promote your book to others and let them know about promotions.

Amazon just acquired Good Reads, so it’s another good reason to join.

What I’ve written here really only touches the basics of what you can do on Good Reads. So off with you now and get promoting.

Advertising Your Writing

furry friendsFor the next 40 days or so I plan to list 30 places to advertise e books for free. By helping you, I’ll be helping myself to stay motivated to advertise my own e book. The list is no particular order, but they will all be used and tested.

Number 1. http://www.free-online-novels.com

They have a form you use to submit your book. Your book must be free. The owner of the site responds within a week and adds a link to your book.

Writing and Recipes

Do your characters eat in your story? A lot of readers love to have the recipes. Especially book clubs. When they get together to talk about your book, they also like to prepare foods that are described in the story. In my book Let The Good Times Roll, two young boys squabble over a left piece of blue berry la tart.

To give the reader a more tangible connection to my story, I add pictures and music clips too on my website page for that book.

Indie Authors (more on Smashwords)

Here is another perk I like about Smashwords. You can offer a coupon with your book and use it to advertise it where ever you choose. The coupon was available instantly and you can pick how long the coupon is good for. I created a coupon that makes my book free from today until September 5th. Since my book is for children, I like to think of it as a back to school special.

If you would like to take advantage of the free download, you can find the book here: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/348392 The coupon code is CL92G I would appreciate a review if you find the book appealing.

Indie Authors

This post may be old news for some of you, but I thought I would share my experience with Smashwords. I’m just starting my writing journey with them and found it is quite beneficial to publish with them. The first must do is to read the style guide, which they offer for free. Formatting is a big deal. Another big one is your cover. It must meet their standards, but it wasn’t expensive to do. I bought the image that you see here for just eleven dollars from http://www.Dreamstime.com

If you follow all of their guideline, your story would be eligible for inclusion in their premium catalog. The big advantage is that Smashwords will provide you with an ISBN number at no charge and your book will be distributed to 50 countries as well as being listed with Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Sony,Apple iBookstore, and Diesel.

I hope this will help some of you are just getting started.
